Retail Trade of Automotive Fuels
The retail trade of automotive fuels represents an essential link in the Romanian economy, fueling the mobility of people and goods nationwide. In Romania, this niche is dominated by a few large players, such as OMV Petrom, Lukoil, Mol and Rompetrol, but there are also numerous independent stations, especially in rural areas or on national roads. The sector has undergone significant evolution in recent decades, moving from simple stations to modern units offering ancillary services such as shops, car washes or recharging points for electric vehicles. The macroeconomics of this field is directly correlated with the global price of crude oil, fiscal policy (excise duties and VAT on fuels are among the highest in the EU) and the degree of motorization of the population. Currently, the Romanian market faces challenges related to the energy transition: demand for traditional fuels is beginning to stagnate, and investments in electric charging infrastructure and hydrogen are gaining momentum. Entrepreneurs in this sector must adapt quickly by diversifying their offering with electric charging points or non-fuel services to remain competitive. Also, environmental legislation is becoming increasingly strict, requiring the modernization of stations to comply with storage and emission standards. Nevertheless, fuel retail remains a profitable activity due to constant demand and relatively stable margins, even if competition is fierce. In conclusion, the CAEN 473 division is a dynamic one, undergoing a major transformation process, and players who can innovate and anticipate trends will have a clear competitive advantage.
