Meat Processing and Preserving Industry (CAEN 101)
The meat processing and preserving industry (CAEN 101) represents an essential link in the agri-food chain in Romania, connecting the livestock sector to the final consumer market. This is not limited to slaughtering but includes a wide range of processes, from cutting and portioning to the manufacture of sausages, smoked products, or canned goods. In recent decades, the sector has undergone significant modernization with the adoption of European standards for hygiene, food safety, and animal welfare. Romania ranks among the main meat producers in Central and Eastern Europe, with a rich tradition in sausages and traditional preparations. However, businesses in this field face numerous challenges: high raw material costs (meat from local producers), fluctuations in energy and logistics prices, and the need for strict compliance with veterinary sanitary regulations. Strong competition from major European processors and food discounters puts pressure on profit margins, forcing entrepreneurs to innovate through value-added products: organic varieties, additive-free, or with sustainable packaging. In this context, the key to success remains the efficiency of the supply chain and investments in technology for traceability and quality control.
